Melbourne band Blue King Brown's roots stem from a meeting of vocalist Natalie Pa'apa'a and fellow percussionist Carlo Santone in 2003. The pair had made names for themselves performing in percussion group Skin. The desire to further explore song and melody saw them perform as Blue King Brown, and early gig highlights included supporting the John Butler Trio on an east coast tour of Australia.
Quite the colourologists, the band chose their name to represent their beliefs: "blue" because the blues is the roots, "king" to represent power through music, "brown" because brown is the funk, groove and soul. Deciding to give the band every possible chance, the two left Byron Bay and headed their van toward Melbourne, where they recruited able and suitable local musicians.
The band's sound is based around percussion, keys and drums. It incorporates beats and groove in a soulful mix of afro beat, roots, rock and reggae and features the evocative lyrics of Pa'apa'a. A debut EP was released in August, 2005, and the band became festival fixtures, playing the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, WOMADelaide, Woodford Folk Festival and the Big Day Out. The band picked up the APRA Songwriters Award and Best Alternative Group at the 2005 MusicOz Awards and was featured as Triple J Home and Hosed artists and as Next Crop artists during their Oz music month.
The band released their debut album Stand Up through their own label, Roots Level Records, in 2006. Follow-up Worldwize Part 1: North and South was recorded over a number of years at locations including Australia and Jamaica and released as a double album through Lion House Records in 2010.
