Tumbleweed formed in Wollongong in 1990 with members comprised of three members of Proton Energy Pills and two of The Unheard. The band released their debut 7" single 'Captain's Log' in 1991 (which was recorded by Mudhoney's Mark Arm and noted producer Jack Endino), and enjoyed increasing attention from second single 'Stoned' and two EPs before releasing their self-titled debut through Sydney-based indie label Waterfront Records in 1992.
The band enjoyed solid airplay for singles including 'Sundial' and 'Acid Rain' and a committed live following, but their career trajectory soared when they supported Nirvana on their Australian tour. Major labels courted the band, with the band signing to Polydor for their next album Galactaphonic in 1995. The band also had a short-lived stay on Atlantic Records subsidiary Seed, who released a compilation album Weedseed; however, the label were merely chasing the next breakthrough grunge band and not interested in developing the band's career and didn't release any further Tumbleweed material.
Extensive touring across the US and UK helped the band's profile, but also added to internal tensions. Guitarist Paul Hausmeister was apparently asked to leave the band as he wasn't willing to leave his job to commit to Tumbleweed. Drummer Steve O'Brien also left the group in support and while the band went on to release Return to Earth in 1996 and Mumbo Jumbo in 2000. They were never quite the same and disbanded soon after.
Tumbleweed were approached to play the 15th anniversary of annual Australian music festival Homebake in 2010, and returned to the stage with their original line-up at a remarkable warm-up gig in their Hometown of Wollongong in late 2009.
